Scope: |
This ESSENTIAL describes the Indian regulatory requirements for pressure equipment, as defined in:
- The Boilers Act (1923)
- Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR-1950)
- The Static and Mobile Pressure Vessels (unfired) Rules, 2016

Legislation in force: |
The IBR-50 (Indian Boiler Regulations 1950) generally apply to:-
- all boilers, including those working on the principles of natural circulation, forced circulation and forced flow with no fixed steam water line, and
- to steam pipes.

APPENDIX
Definitions under The Boilers Act (1923):
“boiler” means a pressure vessel in which steam is generated for use external to itself by application of heat which is wholly or partly under pressure when steam is shut off but does not include a pressure vessel,—
(i) with capacity less than 25 litres (such capacity being measured from the feed check valve to the main steam stop valve);
(ii) with less than one kilogram per centimetre square design gauge pressure and working gauge pressure; or
(iii) in which water is heated below one hundred degrees centigrade
“boiler component” means steam piping, feed piping, economiser, superheater, any mounting or other fitting and any other external or internal part of a boiler which is subject to pressure exceeding one kilogram per centimetre square gauge
“manufacture” means manufacture, construction and fabrication of boiler or boiler component, or both

The webpage provides instructions for online boiler registration under J&K Boiler Act (1991), fees and files to be uploaded:
- boiler folder containing certificates of manufacture and tests of all boiler mountings and fittings
- drawings of boiler and steam pipe line
- layout of steam pipe line
- certificate of competency of boiler attendant
- welder’s qualification certificate approved under IBR 1950
