This ESSENTIAL describes the EMC requirements of electrical appliances used in Hong Kong, based on the following legislation and information:
- Electrical Products (Safety) Regulation (Cap. 406G)
- Telecommunications (Control of Interference) Regulations (Cap. 106 B)
- EMSD (Electrical and Mechanical Services Department) Codes of Practice and Guidance’s

Application of regulations and classification of apparatus
1) These regulations shall apply to every apparatus belonging to any of the following classes of apparatus:
a) propulsion systems of boats and vehicles
b) information technology equipment;
c) sound and television broadcast receivers and associated equipment;
d) electrical lighting and similar equipment;
e) household appliances, electric tools and similar apparatus
Hint: Only emission requirements are given in this legislation.

2. Protection against hazards arising from an electrical product
An electrical product shall be so designed and constructed in order to ensure that—

(b) temperatures, arcs or radiation which are not part of the intended function of the product, and likely to cause a danger, are not produced;
