This ESSENTIAL describes the requirements of electrical appliances used in explosive atmospheres in Hong Kong, based on the following legislation and information:

These regulations shall apply to all industrial undertakings in which electricity is generated, transformed, distributed or used.
Article 24 - Precautions for special conditions
All apparatus and conductors—
a) exposed to weather, water, corrosive atmospheres or other adverse conditions;
b) exposed to flammable surroundings or explosive atmosphere; or
c) used in any process or for any special purpose other than for lighting or power,
shall be so constructed, installed and protected as may in the circumstances of such exposure or use be necessary to prevent electrical hazard or other danger.
Part III - Electricity
15. Inspection of electrical installations
1) In a mine, the Superintendent of Mines or any authorized mines officer may examine any electrical installation at any reasonable time.
2) If any matter appears to be defective, the Superintendent of Mines shall report thereon to the manager who shall take steps to carry out the necessary repairs within 24 hours of receiving the report.

109. Restriction on installation of electrical apparatus
1) A person must not install, or cause or permit to be installed, an electrical apparatus in the hazardous area of—
a) a licensed store in which any Class 2.1 S2DG, Class 3 S2DG, Class 3A S2DG, Class 4 S2DG or Class 5 S2DG, or S2DG of any other class with subsidiary hazard of 2.1, 3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 or 5.1 are stored; or
b) a Class 3A premises.
2) Subsection (1) does not apply if—
a) the electrical apparatus and its wiring are designed and installed in a way that they do not ignite flammable vapour during the operation of the apparatus; and
b) the electrical apparatus and its wiring are installed—
i) after an application for the installation has been approved by the Director; and
ii) in compliance with the standard specified in the fire safety requirements issued for the store or premises after an application to the Director for the installation is made.
3) A person who contravenes subsection (1) commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine at level 4 and to imprisonment for 1 month.
